Avalanche warning for region Sør-Troms Monday 20.05.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Old man Winter is making a comeback above 500 meters. Unstable wind slabs can be encountered on some slopes. Avoid areas prone to glide avalanches at lower elevations.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Buried weak layer of new snow

Glide avalanches

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Wet snow/melting near the ground

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 19. May 2024

Snødekket er i all hovedsak smelteomvandlet, grovkornet snø i overflaten. Søndag har det trolig kommet noe nysnø i høyden.

Snøgrensen kryper stadig oppover og det er mange steder bart i fjellet.

Glidesprekker er utbredt.

Torsdag morgen har det på Senja løsnet flere glideskred.

Mountain weather

Sunday 19. May 2024

12 mm precipitation, up to 18 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l during renoon. Breeze from southwest, changing to breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -4 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 20. May 2024

5 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Fresh breeze from west. -6 °C to 1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Vinteren gjør et lite comeback i høyden. Over 500 moh kan det danne seg små ustabile nysnøflak. Disse kan være lette å løse ut.

Unngå ferdsel under glidesprekker i lavlandet.
