Avalanche warning for region Svartisen Thursday 23.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
General unstable conditions. Wet avalanches are expected in the first part of the day. In the mountains where precipitation falls as snow, avoid new and fresh windslabs.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Wednesday 22. January 2020

Mountain weather

Wednesday 22. January 2020

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to strong breeze from the southwest during the evening. -8 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 23. January 2020

25 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from south, changing to gale from the west during renoon. -7 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
