Avalanche warning for region Sør-Troms Tuesday 14.01.2020

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 13. January 2020

Mountain weather

Monday 13. January 2020

6 mm precipitation, up to 12 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from south, changing to moderate gale from the west during the afternoon. -6 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 14. January 2020

3-6 mm precipitation. Breeze from northeast, changing to strong breeze from the southeast during the afternoon. -7 °C to -1 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Fortsatt vind i kombinasjon med enkelte snøbyger vil bygge opp noen ferske fokksnøflak over mildværsgrensen. Litt økende vindstyrke og endring i retning vil legge opp enkelte ferske fokksnøflak i nye heng. Det er generelt gunstige temperaturer for stabilisering av fokksnøen.
