Avalanche warning for region Voss Sunday 07.03.2021

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near surface

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 6. March 2021

Det gamle snødekket er i stor grad vått eller smelteomvandlet høyt til fjells. Etter kalde netter har overflaten fryst til og gitt bærende skare. Over ca. 1100 moh. finns fersk vindpåvirka nysnø.

Observasjon rundt 1400 moh. i Aurland på søndag viste at svakt lag av kantkorn dannet i kuldeperioden i januar-februar framleis er intakt i høyfjellet.

Lørdag formiddag gikk det kraftige byger med snø over ca 600 moh.

Mountain weather

Saturday 6. March 2021

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from west. -6 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 7. March 2021

No precipitation. Fresh breeze from northwest, changing to breeze from the north during the afternoon. -10 °C to -4 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
