Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Friday 12.01.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in areas with fresh wind deposited snow. There may be pockets with a persistent weak layer beneath the wind depposited snow.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 11. January 2024

Mountain weather

Thursday 11. January 2024

No precipitation. Fresh breeze from northwest. -13 °C to -1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Friday 12. January 2024

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Strong breeze from northwest, changing to breeze from the west during the afternoon. -11 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
