Avalanche warning for region Jotunheimen Monday 17.01.2022

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Published:
Large amount of wind transported snow over the last two days. Avoid all avalanche terrain. Naturally triggered avalanches likely.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 16. January 2022

Mountain weather

15 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 700 m a.s.l Sunday night. Gale from west, changing to storm from the northwest during the evening. -13 °C to -4 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 17. January 2022

5 mm precipitation, up to 12 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l during the evening. Strong gale from northwest, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during renoon. -13 °C to -5 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
