Avalanche Danger Assessment
• Overnight freeze has given us a crust, which in places is breakable, up to about 600masl on the south aspects. Higher in the terrain the snow surface is mixed between hard wind slabs, sastrugi and old ice crust. The snowpack appears generally stable, there was one whomp observed on an isolated windslab at 600masl S/SE aspect south of Lyngseidet. On Kjosbreen a cornice had fallen on to steep terrain only launching some loose snow.
No further information on the avalanche observed on Stormheimfjellet on sunday.
In the forest below Storgalten now signs of the PWL were to be observed on monday.
• The mild temperatures combined with refreeze during clear nights suggest further stabilisation, though the sun and melting temporarily will weaken the snowpack in the afternoon.
• The strategic mindset is “status quo”, after having “stepping out, cautiously” for two days. We have to bear in mind the limited observations from higher altitude and the avalanche on Stormheimfjellet (sunday 3/3).
Otherwise we’re concerned with the breakable crust's effect on the skiability.
