Avalanche warning for region Nord-Troms Saturday 16.03.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Avoid avalanche terrain with newly deposited wind slabs. They can be on top of newly formed layers of facets high in the snowpack. Unstable snow will be possible to find in many aspects since the wind direction will change during the day. Deep persistent weak layers exist, but are generally hard to trigger.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 16. March 2024

Mountain weather

Friday 15. March 2024

4 mm precipitation, up to 12 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Strong breeze from north, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the evening. -20 °C to -7 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Saturday 16. March 2024

8 mm precipitation, up to 13 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the west during the evening. -18 °C to -10 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
