Avalanche warning for region Svartisen Sunday 12.04.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Strong winds and precipitation will quickly form unstable wind slabs in the alpine. A change in wind directions causes a more widespread problem. At lower elevations, wet loose avalanches are likely in the afternoon.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 11. April 2020

Mountain weather

Saturday 11. April 2020

Little to no precipitation. Breeze from west, changing to fresh breeze from the southeast during the evening. -10 °C to -5 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 12. April 2020

20 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southeast, changing to gale from the north during the afternoon. -9 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
