Avalanche warning for region Trollheimen Wednesday 23.12.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
The snowpack is very unstable. Avoid areas with wind-deposited snow. It is also possible to trigger avalanches in a persistant weak layer in old snow found in bowls and gullies.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 22. December 2020

Snødekket er generelt tynt og overflata varierer mellom glatt, hardpakka og isete til mjukare snø. Snøgrensa ligg på 500 - 800 moh., lågast i indre deler av regionen. Mest snø finn ein i Sunndalsfjella. Det er lite snø i ytre strøk,

Det har vore kantkorning i snødekket, men det er førebels ikkje eit problem.

Mountain weather

Tuesday 22. December 2020

6-9 mm precipitation. Strong breeze from southeast, changing to fresh breeze from the west during the evening. -7 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Wednesday 23. December 2020

20 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from northwest. -10 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Stadvis mykje nedbør og kraftig vind frå nordvest vil gje stor snøtransport og pålagring i søraustlege leområder. Her vil ein få ustabile fokksnøflak som stadvis kan ligge på svakt lag kantkorn eller glatt skare.Skred kan soleis vere lette å løyse ut og verte store.
