Avalanche warning for region Vest-Finnmark Sunday 19.05.2024

Danger level 1 - Low avalanche danger

Published:
New snow above 100 masl. can cause slab avalanches. Rain in lower elevations can cause glide avalanches and wet avalanches. Keep distance to cornices and cliffs. Be careful with weak snow bridges over creeks and rotten snow close to rocks.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Buried weak layer of new snow

Glide avalanches

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Wet snow/melting near the ground

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 18. May 2024

Snødekket er stort sett smelteomvandlet og fuktig etter regn og fravær av nattefrost tidligere denne uken. Over ca. 800 moh. kom nedbøren som snø.
Noen steder er snødekket hardt, andre steder er det våt løssnø. Stigende snøgrense.

Utbredelsen av et vedvarende svakt kantkornlag antas å være begrenset til de høyeste fjelltoppene.

Mountain weather

Saturday 18. May 2024

Little to no precipitation. Fresh breeze from southwest. -2 °C to 5 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 19. May 2024

3-6 mm precipitation. Rain up to 100 m a.s.l during renoon. Breeze from north. -7 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
