Avalanche warning for region Finnmarkskysten Monday 01.03.2021

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

A strong low pressure system is forecasted to hit the region. Strong winds are forecasted. There are also well-defined persistent weak layers buried in the snowpack that can cause large avalanches. Keep good distance to avalanche terrain and run out zones

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Søndag gikk mildværet opp til ca 800 moh. Tidligere snødekke har vært preget av sterk vind som har gitt et generelt hardt snødekke av fokksnø.

Før mildværet var det vedvarende svake lag av kantkorn og begerkrystaller. Dette finnes enten ved bakken, i forbindelse med skare eller i lag under fokksnøen.

Det er forsatt stor fare for naturlig utløste skred.

Mulig polart lavtrykk vil passere i løpet av dagen, det er ventet kraftig vind og nysnø. Dette vil danne fersk ustabil fokksnø, som kan løsne naturlig. Det er stor usikkerhet knyttet til lavtrykket, ved mindre vind og nedbør vil også faregraden være lavere.

Belastningen av nedbøren kan også løse ut skred i vedvarende svake lag og gi større skred. Der snødekket forsatt er vått vil det kunne løsne våte flakskred først på dagen.
