Avalanche warning for region Hallingdal Sunday 07.05.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Persistent weak layer underneath wind slabs can be easy to trigger in the alpine. Loose snow avalanches can occur in sun-facing slopes in the afternoon.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow beneath a crust

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 6. May 2023

Mountain weather

Saturday 6. May 2023

No precipitation. Fresh breeze from southeast, changing to breeze from the south during the afternoon. -10 °C to 1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Sunday 7. May 2023

No precipitation. Breeze from south. -13 °C to 4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
