Avalanche warning for region Hardanger Friday 20.12.2019

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 19. December 2019

Mountain weather

Thursday 19. December 2019

20 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from southeast, changing to moderate gale from the southeast during the afternoon. -10 °C to -3 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 20. December 2019

8 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southeast, changing to gale from the southeast during the evening. -4 °C to 1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Pågåande kraftig vind med dreiing austleg samt ny nedbør vil gje snøtransport inn i vestlege leområder i høgda. Her vil ein få ferske fokksnøflak. Det vil òg ligge ustabile flak i nordlege heng.

Stadvis kan desse ligge på vedvarande svake lag.
