Avalanche warning for region Ofoten Wednesday 12.01.2022

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Published:
Very dangerous avalanche conditions. Travel in avalanche terrain not recommended. We expect intense wet slab activity around and below treeline. Wind slabs can be easily triggered in the alpine.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 11. January 2022

Mountain weather

Tuesday 11. January 2022

7 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Strong breeze from south, changing to moderate gale from the south during the evening. -11 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Wednesday 12. January 2022

30 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l during renoon. Gale from southwest. -6 °C to 0 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
