Avalanche warning for region Ofoten Tuesday 17.05.2022

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Challenging conditions due to different avalanche problems. Wet snow found in lower elevations. Conservative terrain choice is essential on freshly loaded storm slabs in the alpine. Glide snow avalanches are unpredictable. Avoid areas beneath glide-cracks.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 16. May 2022

Stedvis mye vann i snøen.

Mountain weather

Monday 16. May 2022

9 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 200 m a.s.l Monday night. Fresh breeze from northwest, changing to breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -6 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Tuesday 17. May 2022

15 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 700 m a.s.l during the evening. Breeze from west, changing to strong breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -10 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Unngå terreng under glidesprekker.
