Avalanche warning for region Salten Sunday 28.01.2024

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Published:
Avoid all avalanche terrain. Rain will weaken the snowpack well into the alpine in the evening.

Large avalanches are likely either as wind slabs within Saturday's slabs or fail on persistent weak layers.

Wet, loose avalanches are likely.
  • The danger is greatest from Sunday evening

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 27. January 2024

Mountain weather

Saturday 27. January 2024

18 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to strong gale from the south during the afternoon. -6 °C to 0 °C at 1100 m a.s.l.

Sunday 28. January 2024

25 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 1200 m a.s.l during the evening. Gale from southwest. -6 °C to 0 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Store naturlig utløste skred ventes i mange heng.

Skred kan også løsne på svake lag, dersom disse ikke løsnet på lørdag.

Under mildværsgrensen kan det gå våte løssnøskred mange steder.

All ferdsel i skredterreng frarådes.
