Snow Cover
• 165 cm • 0 cm • Wind slab (hard slab) • Dry • Ok • Mixed and variable. Thin wind crust on soft snow, loose soft snow in patches, hard snow in wind exposed areas.
Weather
• No precipitation • 50% clouds • Clear, gusty wind from Southeast
Tests
• ECTX • Good • ECT block cut to 125cm, no result
• CTN • Good • Standard column cut to 125cm
Snow Profile
• E • Partial profile recorded, wind picked up so profile was abandoned. Main findings: flat temperature profile from surface to 60cm depth, fairly homogenous hardness 4F+ /1F to 121cm, with a 1cm P crust on top.
We dug to 150cm and found a 5cm 1F/P layer of larger crystal (2-3mm), we disagreed about whether these were rounding facets or melt/freeze forms. Below this was ice/very hard melt/freeze snow. • -4 °C @ 0 cm, -4 °C @ 10 cm, -5 °C @ 20 cm, -6 °C @ 30 cm, -5 °C @ 40 cm, -5 °C @ 50 cm, -5 °C @ 60 cm
Avalanche Danger Assessment
• Low at this elevation, angle and aspect. • Flat temperature profile, dry snow, so trending more stable. Recent wind slab development on Tverfjellet internally very cohesive. • 1 Low • Forecast correct • While stable conditions were found on this location at Tverfjellet, adding elevation and angle, or changing aspect, will change the picture substantially. Wind formed slab was very cohesive and dense based on hardness tests.
Notes
• Boot penetration 20-30cm, ski penetration 5cm
