Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Frå søndag har det vore mildvêr (opptil ca. 800 moh på det høgaste), nedbør og periodevis svært sterk vind. Snøoverflata har blitt våt under mildvêrsgrensa, men har truleg fryst til og blitt dekka av vindpåverka snø i ettertid, då det har blitt kaldare. Snødekket er ikkje gjennomfukta over skoggrensa, og det er framleis lagdeling i snøen.

Vedvarande svake lag finnast difor framleis, både rundt skare frå mildvêr 23. januar og ved bakken. Generelt er desse laga vanskelege å påverke, men tysdag fjernutløyste ei gruppe eit skred ved Storvikfjellet på Øksfjordhalvøya og fekk store drønn i snøen, som tyder på at det stadvis er mogleg.

10 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Fresh breeze from southwest, changing to gale from the northwest during the afternoon. -9 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 3. March 2022

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the evening. -12 °C to -7 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Skred kan løysast ut i fersk fokksnø, som i hovudsak finnast i leområder mot sør og aust. Sidan det er gunstige temperaturar vil fokksnøflak frå onsdag ha stabilisert seg noko, men nye fokksnøflak kan dannast sidan det kjem litt meir nedbør og vind. Enkelte stadar er det også mogleg å løyse ut og fjernutløyse skred på vedvarande svake lag.
