Avalanche warning for region Vest-Finnmark Tuesday 29.03.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Complicated situation with potensial persistent weak layers in the snow pack, together with wind and fresh snow. Avalanches may be released both naturally and remotely.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Monday 28. March 2022

I slutten av forrige uke kom det 10-30 cm nysnø, mest i nordvestlige deler av regionen. Det har vært skiftende vindretning og fokksnø finnes i flere himmelretninger.
Det gamle snødekket har vært vært fuktet opp til ca 800-900 moh, og er gjennomfuktet opp til 5-600 moh.
Der det er avblåst består snøoverflaten av skare.

Søndag meldes det om begynnende kantkorndannelse høyt i snødekket.
I indre deler av regionen finnes fortsatt svake lag ved bakken som kan kollapse ved svært stor tilleggsbelastning der snødekket er tynt.

Tynt og bredt naturlig utløst skred på ca. 500 moh østvendtheng i Haldefjella trolig søndag ettermiddag pga kraftig vind/ pålagring.

4 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Breeze from northeast, changing to fresh breeze from the north during the evening. -17 °C to -8 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Tuesday 29. March 2022

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Moderate gale from north. -12 °C to -7 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Snøbyger og kraftig vind fører til at det dannes ustabile fokksnøflak i leområder. Stedvis kan flakene legge seg over et nyutviklet vedvarende svakt lag med kantkorn. I såfall vil situasjonen bli krevende og store skred kan løsne naturlig under pålagring. Det er også fare for fjernutløsning av skred der fokksnøflak legger seg på vedvarende svakt lag.
Utbredelsen av det nyutviklede kantkorn-problemet er svært usikkert.
