Avalanche warning for region Voss Monday 20.02.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Change in weather contidions is expected to give avalanche activity, especially the night before Monday. Wet avalanches from release areas at lower altitudes, and dry slab avalanches in the mountains.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Det ligg nysnø i overflata etter snøfall i helga. Under denne, er heile snøpakka smelteomdanna opp til 700-900 moh. Vidare opp til 1000-1200 moh finst det smelteomdanna og gjenfrose snø og skare under nysnøen.

Rundt skaren som ligg nær overflata kan det ha danna seg rim og kantkorn, som no delvis er dekt med snø.

Søndag morgon var det på Vikafjell (990 moh) -7 °C. Det blas 6 m/s frå sør. Observatør ved Vossevangen melder søndag om langvarig tåke.

10 mm precipitation, up to 18 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l during the evening. Breeze from northwest. -11 °C to -5 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Monday 20. February 2023

45 mm precipitation, up to 70 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 1300 m a.s.l during renoon. Fresh breeze from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the west during renoon. -3 °C to 2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Vêromslag natt til måndag. Det er venta mange våte skred med middels utløpslengder frå lågareliggande lausneområde natt til måndag. Faren er størst der det regnar på mykje tørr nysnø.

Høgare oppe, der nedbøren kjem som snø, aukar faren for tørre flakskred frå leområde som vender mot nordaust, og seinare i leområde som vender mot aust.
