Avalanche warning for region Finnmarkskysten Monday 02.01.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Difficult conditions. There is a persistent weak layer buried in the snow pack, especially around the tree line. Be careful in areas with wind deposited snow.
  • The danger is greatest until Monday afternoon

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near surface

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 1. January 2023

Mountain weather

Sunday 1. January 2023

10 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 100 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Strong breeze from southeast, changing to gale from the west during the afternoon. -9 °C to -3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 2. January 2023

6-10 mm precipitation. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l during renoon. Strong breeze from west, changing to breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -8 °C to -2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
