Avalanche warning for region Finnmarkskysten Wednesday 28.02.2024

Danger level 1 - Low avalanche danger

Published:
The snow surface is hard after strong winds last week, and the mild weather have been favorable for stabilizing the snow. The avalanche hazard will probably not change even though strong wind is forecasted. Some small unstable storm slabs can be formed, and persistent weak layers are present deeper in the snowpack.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 27. February 2024

Mountain weather

Tuesday 27. February 2024

No precipitation. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the south during the evening. -9 °C to -5 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Wednesday 28. February 2024

Little to no precipitation. Gale from southwest. -7 °C to -4 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
