Avalanche warning for region Helgeland Thursday 11.01.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Fresh wind slabs might be created in lee areas is the wind pics up and show showers are on its way during the afternoon. It might be easy to trigger avalanches in the fresh wind slabs.

At low elevation small, wet avalanches might release as the fresh snow gets more and more moist in the evening.

Avalanche problems

New snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Wednesday 10. January 2024

Mountain weather

Wednesday 10. January 2024

16 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 900 m a.s.l Wednesday night. Moderate gale from northwest. -6 °C to 0 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 11. January 2024

10 mm precipitation, up to 28 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l during the evening. Breeze from northwest, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during the afternoon. -7 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
