Avalanche warning for region Jotunheimen Thursday 24.02.2022

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Conditions are challenging. Be sure you have enough knowledge and experience before travelling in steep terrain. Be extra careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow. There are still weak layers in the snowpack.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snøoverflaten består i hovedsak av tørr fokksnø med varierende fasthet. Det er mest snø i øst- og sørvendte leområder, og mer avblåst i vindutsatt og vestvendt terreng. Onsdag stiger temperaturen kortvarig som kan gi vått snødekke opp til ca. 600 moh.

Snødekket er komplekst med nedføyket rim, og kantkorn i utvikling, i tillegg til kantkorn ved bakken. Sistnevnte er vanskeligere å påvirke.

Lørdag ble det meldt om flere skiløperutløste str 2 skred ved Lemonsjøen.

Onsdag meldes det om kraftig snøfokk i fjellet.

20 mm precipitation, up to 35 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Gale from southwest. -10 °C to -4 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 24. February 2022

5 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -14 °C to -7 °C at 1800 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Torsdag vil det være mindre løssnø å flytte på etter mye vind onsdag. Faren for naturlig utløste skred vil avta. Men det vil fortsatt være lett å løse ut skred i den ferske fokksnøen i le for sørvest vind. I tillegg finnes det vedvarende svake lag i snødekket enkelte plasser som kan gi store skred og som også gjør at det er fare for å fjernutløse skred.
Skredfaren er størst første del av dagen.
