Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Sunday 23.01.2022

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Large avalanches are likely in areas with receives amount of maximum precipitation. The wet snowpack from Saturday is expected to be stable.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 22. January 2022

Her er forholdene generelt stabile.

Mountain weather

Saturday 22. January 2022

12 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to gale from the southwest during the evening. -3 °C to 4 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 23. January 2022

20 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as rain. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to strong gale from the southwest during the evening. -2 °C to 4 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
