Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Sunday 06.03.2022

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger here.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 5. March 2022

I midten av uken kom det en del nedbør, og det kom stort sett som snø. Perioder med kraftig vind har dannet fokksnøansamlinger i høyden, men disse har stabilisert seg raskt på grunn av milde temperaturer.

Mountain weather

Saturday 5. March 2022

7 mm precipitation, up to 12 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l Saturday night. Fresh breeze from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -4 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 6. March 2022

7-10 mm precipitation. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -6 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
