Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Tuesday 26.03.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in terrain with fresh wind-deposited snow. Also be careful in steep and sunexposed terrain where small loose avalanches can release naturally.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 25. March 2024

Litt nysnø siden lørdag har lagt seg opp på hardt og isete snøoverflate.

Det har blitt observert påbegynnende kantkorn dannelse under fokksnø, men det regnes ikke som aktivt skredproblem per dags dato.

Mountain weather

Monday 25. March 2024

3 mm precipitation, up to 8 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Strong breeze from northwest, changing to breeze from the northwest during renoon. -11 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Tuesday 26. March 2024

6 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Fresh breeze from southwest. -10 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
