Avalanche warning for region Lyngen Sunday 19.02.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Locally unstable conditions. A skier or a snow mobile may trigger avalanches in the fresh wind slabs, while persistent weak layers deeper in the snow in general is hard to trigger.
  • The danger is greatest from Sunday afternoon

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Hard og bærende skare går høyt til fjells, etter mildvær tidligere i uken. Stedvis ligger det fokksnø oppå dette, særlig høyt til fjells.

Flere steder er det fortsatt avblåst ned til rygger.

Observasjoner fra tidligere forrige uke tyder på at kantkornlag langs bakken har blitt fuktig opp til i hvert fall 600 moh. Observasjoner på flere store skred under siste uvær tyder på at kantkornlaget fortsatt er tilstede og kan påvirkes ved stor nok belastning, og gi store til svært store skred.

Det var en omfattende skredsyklus i mildværet i starten av uken, med flere skred i regionen.

Little to no precipitation. Breeze from south. -11 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 19. February 2023

6 mm precipitation, up to 12 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Breeze from south, changing to strong breeze from the north during the afternoon. -9 °C to -2 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Snøbyger og vindøkning fra nordøst utover dagen, gir fersk pålagring av fokksnø som kan være lett å løse ut for en skikjører.

Svake lag dypere i snødekket er nå vanskelig å påvirke, men vær forsiktig i overganger fra tykt til tynt snødekke. Skred som løsner på disse lagene kan bli store.
