Avalanche Danger Assessment
• The warm weather has started to have an impact on the snow on steep south aspects and lower in the terrain, some small loose avalanches observed. A slab avalanche has been observed on E/SE aspect of Stormheimfjellet at about 450masl, possibly on the PWL, otherwise the snowpack has appeared stable. During the day there was some precipitation that was not forecasted, this appeared as better skiing in altitude, but might also increase the avalanche danger in some places. In the north (Russelv) there was a report of wet snow up til 400masl. The PWL still gives whomps in the forest on northerly aspects. • The mild temperature and the sun start to have a destabilising effect on steep terrain in southern aspects and lower in the terrain, but elsewhere the process will stabilise the snow. The “warm” snowpack however is unfavourable if and when we get bigger amounts of fresh cold snow on top.
• The strategic mindset is considered stepping out with caution, and remembering that we have a limited amount of information from higher altitude and there need to perform more thorough assessments.
