Avalanche warning for region Lyngen Tuesday 21.05.2024

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in areas with wind slabs. In lower elevations where the snow is wet, loose avalanches or glide avalanches are expected. Keep distance to steep rocky terrain and cornices. Be also careful with weak snow bridges over creeks and rotten snow close to rocks.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 20. May 2024

Mountain weather

Monday 20. May 2024

12 mm precipitation, up to 18 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Strong breeze from west. -9 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 21. May 2024

1-3 mm precipitation. Rain up to 100 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Breeze from northwest. -9 °C to 1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
