Avalanche warning for region Nord-Troms Tuesday 03.01.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Complex conditions with several avalanche problems. Be careful in areas with wind deposited snow, persistent weak layers are present in many areas. With the last days snowfall it can be harder to provoke danger signs from these layers, but if avlanches first releases they can become large.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow beneath a crust

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 2. January 2023

Mountain weather

Monday 2. January 2023

5-8 mm precipitation. Rain up to 300 m a.s.l during renoon. Strong breeze from northwest, changing to breeze from the northwest during the afternoon. -12 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Tuesday 3. January 2023

2 mm precipitation, up to 8 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Breeze from southwest. -14 °C to -7 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

Roligere værforhold utover dagen, men svake lag i snødekket vedvarer.
