Avalanche warning for region Ofoten Wednesday 22.01.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Avoid lee areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies. Especially where the wind deposited slabs are thin or soft, a slab avalanche is easier to trigger there.

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Mildt vær og nedbør som regn har fuktet opp fokksnøen og nysnøen fra tidlig i helgen. Flere runder med mildvær den siste tiden har ført til at det gamle snødekket er gjennomfuktet og generelt stabilt opp til ca 800 moh.

Over mildværsgrensen vil kraftig vind og mye snø på mandag og tirsdag ha gitt stor snøtransport og fokksnø i leområder. Der vinden har fått tak er det avblåst og hard mildværsskare i overflaten.

27 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from west, changing to strong breeze from the northwest during the evening. -8 °C to -3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Wednesday 22. January 2020

6 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from northwest, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the evening. -10 °C to -4 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Kraftig vind og snøbyger i høyden tirsdag har ført til pålagring av fokksnø i leområder over skoggrensen. Det vil ta tid for fokksnøflakene å stabilisere seg, og fortsatt kraftig vind tidlig på dagen og snøbyger vil gi transport av snø over i allerede velfylte leområder. Det vil fremdeles være lett for skikjørere å løse ut skred i fokksnøen.
