Avalanche warning for region Sør-Troms Friday 10.02.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Locally unstable conditions. Skiers can trigger avalanches at high elevations with fresh wind-deposited snow. The old wind slabs from earlier this week are starting to stabilize, and the likelihood of avalanches are related to the newest wind slabs.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Thursday 9. February 2023

Mountain weather

Thursday 9. February 2023

20 mm precipitation. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l Thursday night. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to fresh breeze from the northwest during the evening. -5 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Friday 10. February 2023

12 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Strong breeze from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the west during the evening. -9 °C to -3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Partly cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
