Avalanche warning for region Salten Tuesday 09.01.2018

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Rising temperatures and rain will weaken the snow pack. Naturally released avalanches are expected, mostly at lower elevations and in the outer parts of the region. In the alpine the wind slabs will remain unstable.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can very easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

I løpet av siste uke er det kommet 5-10 cm nysnø.

Torsdag ble det rapportert om løs ubundet snø i skogen, over skogen fokksnøflak med varierende hardhet. Hardt på rygger og knauser, mykere hvor vinden ikke har tatt så hardt.

En periode med kaldt vær har gitt noe rimdannelse på overflaten opp til skoggrensen, rim er antagelig ødelagt av vind høyere opp.

Det gamle snødekket er stabilt og består i fjellet av to skarelag med kantkorn og grovkornet snø.

Rim er funnet innblandet i ny og innblåst snø, men det tyder ikke på at det utgjør et problem. Det er kantkorn ifm. førjulskaren, men det er ikke observasjoner av at dette er et problem.

Ikke rapportert om skredaktivitiet de siste dagene.

10 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from northwest, changing to breeze from the south during the evening. -12 °C to -4 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 9. January 2018

20 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Strong breeze from southwest. -6 °C to -1 °C at 1400 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Mildvær og regn svekker bindingene i snødekket i lavlandet. Her ventes det naturlig utløste skred. I høyfjellet og i indre strøk vil det bli pålagring og ustabil fokksnø i leområder.

Skredfaren ventes å nå 4-stor under mildværsgrensen.
