Avalanche warning for region Salten Saturday 19.03.2022

Large naturally released, dry avalanches are likely in the alpine. Some very large wet avalanches are likely.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Buried weak layer of faceted snow beneath a crust

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snøoverflaten er de fleste steder gjenfrosset smelteformer.

En lengre periode med mildvær har gjort det gamle snødekket til en stabil pakke med smelteformer til ca 1000 moh.

Høyt til fjells er det fortsatt lagdelt tørr snø.

Det er et vedvarende svakt lag av kantkorn i snødekket. Laget er låst av harde overliggende lag.

Det er observert våte skred der sola varmer opp snøoverflaten.

10 mm precipitation, up to 18 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l Friday night. Strong breeze from south, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the evening. -6 °C to -1 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Saturday 19. March 2022

55 mm precipitation, up to 100 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 1200 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Strong gale from southwest, changing to gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -3 °C to 3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Stor snøskredfare ventes, særlig i de nordlige delene mot Ofoten.

Store nedbørsmengder som regn kan føre til enkelte svært store våte skred. Gamle vedvarende svake lag kan vekkes til live.
Mange middels store våte skred ventes.

Store naturlig utløste skred ventes i mange heng i høyfjellet.

Våte flakskred ventes over skoggrensen når mildværet fukter fokksnøflakene som ble dannet fredag.
