Avalanche warning for region Sør-Troms Sunday 17.12.2023

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Conditions are challenging. Be sure you have enough knowledge and experience before travelling in steep terrain. Be extra careful in lee areas with wind deposited snow. There are persistent weak layers in the snowpack.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can very easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow near surface

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Saturday 16. December 2023

Mountain weather

Saturday 16. December 2023

12 mm precipitation, up to 20 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 500 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Fresh breeze from southeast, changing to moderate gale from the south during renoon. -6 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Sunday 17. December 2023

15 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the west during the afternoon. -4 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
