Avalanche warning for region Vest-Telemark Monday 24.04.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
The snowpack is still wet and unstable. Avoid potential release areas and runout areas for avalanches. It might be some spots with fresh wind deposited snow at high altitude.

Avalanche problems

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow beneath a crust

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Sunday 23. April 2023

Mountain weather

Sunday 23. April 2023

6-10 mm precipitation. Precipitation as rain. Fresh breeze from southeast, changing to fresh breeze from the southwest during the afternoon. -3 °C to 3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Monday 24. April 2023

14-16 mm precipitation. Rain up to 1200 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Breeze from southeast, changing to breeze from the north during the afternoon. -1 °C to 3 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
